Comparing the Flu to Anthrax

Comparing the flu to anthrax might seem difficult. Anthrax, along with many other conditions, can begin with what are commonly referred to as "flu-like" symptoms, such as fever, muscle aches, chills, and night sweats. When comparing the flu to anthrax, it is important to keep in mind that early anthrax symptoms usually do not include a runny nose, which is typical of the flu and common cold.

Comparing the Flu to Anthrax: A Summary

Many conditions, including anthrax, begin with what are commonly referred to as "flu-like" symptoms. These symptoms can include:
 
  • Fever
  • Muscle aches
  • Tiredness
  • Chills
  • Night sweats.
     
However, in most cases anthrax can be distinguished from the flu, because the flu has additional symptoms. In previous reports of anthrax cases, early anthrax symptoms usually did not include a runny nose, which is typical of the flu and common cold.
